Divided Congress

Republicans were on track for at least a 53-seat majority in the House. They knocked out some of the House's longest-serving Democrats, including John Spratt of South Carolina, Ike Skelton of Missouri, Chet Edwards of Texas and Earl Pomeroy of North Dakota. However, incomplete returns showed the GOP picked up at least 60 House seats — the biggest party turnover in more than 60 years.

As a result of that huge turnover, the Republicans were able to dismantle the Democrats' majority in the House, resulting in a party's largest congressional-seat loss since 1948.

Still in the Senate, the Democrats remained in control. Although, they did lose some seats to the Republicans. They will have a 49 seat majority to the Republicans 49 seat minority. The reason, the Democrats are in the majority is because of the 2 independents in the Senate, that consistently caucus with the Democrats, which then gives the Democrats a 51 seat majority.

Perhaps the most contentious of all the Senate races, was the seat held by the Democratic leader in the Senate, Harry Reid, who barely squeaked by with a 50%-45% win over his Republican opponent. In actuality, he only won 3 of the states 17 counties. If it were not for Las Vegas, he would have lost the seat.
