Seven Interview Questions That Kill Careers

When I opened my email this morning the Wall Street Journal had an interesting article that discussed What Not to Say in a Job Interview.
Not only will answering your cell phone, showing up late or dressing inappropriately kill your chances, but so will what you say. Even if you think a comment is completely innocent it may be a career killer.
  1. So, tell me a little about yourself.
    The article says that it is hard to know what the interviewer is looking for this question, which is often the first question, but it is safe to assume they want a bit of background on your professional history. If you begin with your place of birth, childhood or God forbid your bad relationship with your parents the interview will be pretty much over. The article also says that is okay to
    "Ask them where they'd like you to begin," says Carolyn Thompson, an executive recruiter and author of 10 Steps to Finding the Perfect Job. Are they looking for your entire professional background, or just your most recent work experience? "It gives you a point to work forward or backward from," Thompson explains.

  2. Why do you want to leave your current job?
    The article says that if you are going on interviews you should want to leave a current employer. It continues by saying that you should never bad mouth your current employer and say that you are just looking for a change. It's okay, according to the article, to discuss a problem with the current employer, but you must show how you attempted to solve it so you don't sound like a whiner.
    Rita Boyle, a senior executive search consultant with New Jersey-based Cornerstone Search Group, suggests explaining how the change is the next logical step for your career path.

    "Explain why you're running to their company instead of why you're running away from your current one," Boyle says.

    Other no-nos? Noting that you want to leave your company (or join a new one) because of anything relating to location, pay, or benefits.

  3. What are your biggest strengths and weaknesses?

    This question requires some degree of modesty. Answering it without the slightest bit of modesty will help kill the interview. The worst thing is to say you don't have any weaknesses. Just as bad is identifying a weakness but not explaining how you got through it. They want to know how you are able to work through those challenges.

    When it comes to strengths don't overbuild yourself but don't give a one size fits all answer either.

    Mark Herschberg, a career skills professor at the Levin Institute in New York City, says almost every candidate trots out a platitude about being smart or hard-working.

    "In those cases, I respond, '95% of the candidates gave me that same answer, can you tell me anything that distinguishes you from them?'" he says.

  4. How would your current or former colleagues describe you?
    This is not the same question as above; don't give the same answer. There is a difference between how you see yourself and how those you work with see you.
    Don't claim to be a great person to hang out with after work. The prospective employer wants to know about during work hours. Likewise don't claim to be the only person to do anything right. Instead think about what each level of the workforce (subordinates, bosses, equals) think about you. How would each of them define you.

  5. What is your goal for the short term?
    You need to know how they are defining short-term. They may be thinking 18 months while you are thinking six months, so make sure you get a time-frame upfront. Knowing this can change your answer to a more appropriate one. One thing you don't ever want to say you are leaving in short order to start your own business, go back to school, or that you see yourself in the interviewer's job.

  6. Are there certain tasks or types of people you don't like?
    This is a particularly loaded question, according to Steven Raz, co-founder of Cornerstone Search Group, so make sure to tread carefully. Steer clear of any answer that is abrasive to authority figures, he counsels.

    At the same time, Bruce Hurwitz of Hurwitz Strategic Staffing, a New York City executive recruiting firm, advises not to feign a universally agreeable demeanor. Be honest here, and note the things you tend to avoid -- whether it's people who are overly chatty, or jobs that require endless data input -- as long as the tasks or personalities aren't going to be an inherent part of the role.

  7. Do you have any questions?
    According to the article not having a question or "coming up blank" shows that you aren't thoughtful or interested in the job. I was surprised to read this, because I don't know how many times I have said there wasn't anything I could think of and I still landed the job. I mean if I feel the interviewer had covered everything why would I have a question? So I was particularly curious what the article had to say about this.

    And not just any questions in return are appropriate. No-nos include asking about compensation for the job, what the company does, if you can work from home, how much vacation time you'll get, or if the drug and background testing are really mandatory. Ask queries that will help "match up your skills, experiences and accomplishments with what they're looking for," says Raz.

    Instead of fumbling in the final minutes of the interview, be prepared with a few great questions that show you're interested in both the company and the job.

    Some good questions to ask might be:
  8. In this position, how will you measure success?
  9. How has your career unfolded here?
  10. What are your priorities for next year, in light of what's happening in the market?
  11. How was your firm able to close (a recent deal)?

    Again this is not a place to discuss compensation or benefits. Instead focusing on your career with them and showing that you are interested in the company even knowing what is in the news regarding them, as you can see by the suggested questions above.

The new Job

Good morning everyone. I hope you all are doing well. I started working at the new job this past Monday. It is a a 16 mile one way trip to the job site. With current gas prices that would be an estimated $100/month in gas just to get to and from work. The job is challenging and rewarding. So glad to be back to work, still I still feel the Lord wants me full time working for him. However, until I can build an income and/or support level large enough to meet our needs (and get insurance) I must continue to go to work for someone else. I look forward to the many challenges that this new job will bring.
This past week, I have come home at 2 pm and taken a nap for a couple of hours before continuing on with my day. Saturday, I will return to the part-time job to put in a few hours there. As I try to replenish my emergency savings. So glad to finally be earning some some cash.

Career Search

Last Friday I had an interview after I taught my Friday morning men class at church. I alluded to it, but for obvious reasons didn't get into much detail. Well I can now say I was officially offered the job today. The highers up in the Randall's (Safeway) Corporation approved my wage and now I will be going in on Monday morning to do my drug screen, fill out the paperwork and do my orientation.

So looks like I will be returning to the grocery game.

3 interviews this week

I had three job interviews this week. That is really good news. In the past three months, I have had weeks with 1 job interview and weeks with no job interviews. This week though was the bonanza, 3 interviews in one week. I am really expecting to be a work sometime next week.

One of those interviews has afforded me an opportunity, and I am waiting to hear from another one that I know is full-time. I will need to make a decision today. So I hope if I get the other offer, they will call me quick.

The one offer I have, can't guarantee full-time, but they are closed on Sunday's so I won't have to worry about church conflicts there. They also are very willing to work with my volunteer/ministry at the church on the couple of nights, I am involved with that.

There is no question I am leaning towards that job, but I also need to be full-time. So, we shall see, what way God leads.

Job Search Takes No Holiday

Today, I thought I would bring you up to speed on my job search. The day before Thanksgiving, I applied to 4 or 5 openings at a retailer, who I applied to before moving here. Who hadn't called me regarding any of my previous applications. I figure I can't dwell on those past failures, I must look forward. This time all the positions are part-time rather then full-time. Still, I figure, it is better to get back to work and earn some cash rather none.

Then their is a retailer across the street from the primary location that applied to that I also applied to on Thanksgiving Day. Yes, even thought was Thanksgiving, I was setting in front of my computer applying to even more potential employers. As one of the pastors (the Spanish Church Pastor) at church said recently, "enjoy your time off, because you are about to go back to back work." I am believing that on faith and ready for it.



While, I am looking for a job, I also want to spend some time, refocusing some of my effort to freelance writing. To that end, I need to look at getting the 2011 Writer's Market So that I can find the correct addresses and contacts for the publications, I want to submit work to. It is an invaluable tool to the freelancer, but isn't really in the budget of this freelancer either.

Another Job Interview Today

I have another job interview today. I am very hopeful that I will soon be back to work. Unfortunately, this job is only a seasonal job, and I will be out of work again at the end of the year. Still though, I would be able to get back to work and start building up some savings again. Then perhaps, I will be able to land the seasonal job that starts in January to, so I would be able to go from this job to the next and I wouldn't have to worry about being unemployed again until about May. Who knows, we will have to see.
Back to today's interview, it is expected to be about two hours, which means I will be late getting to the church to help out, but that's o.k., this interview (and landing a job) is more important then help out with a food pantry type deal. Keeping my fingers crossed that I get this job.

Today's Job Fair Was A Disappointment

After being promised that a number of career options would be at today's job fair, I found it to be a huge disappointment. In the end there was only about 7 booths actually staffed with employers. Of those 4 was in the insurance industry, looking for people to sale insurance. One was the Army, one was a job training school (8-week course) that is a non-profit and will train you at no cost to you. Finally, the other booth was a temporary agency seeking people for customer service jobs in Austin, and clerical jobs in Dallas and San Antonio.

Job Search Continues - Gets Frustrating

I continue to search for a job. While, I have had some interviews, I haven't had as many as I would have expected. A number of the jobs, I have applied for I have more then enough experience. Yet, I don't get called for even an interview. It has become very frustrating. Why? Because, I want a job. Anything (even part-time or temporary)! Yet, when they don't call, when I am clearly qualified, I wonder if they even looked at my application. I even wonder, if I was passed over, because of my older age and/or they are afraid, I I will quit as soon as I find something "better." I mean what else can it be, other then those three (3) reasons? I have 18+ years of retail experience. Only need 10 years of experience on the resume. If I were to go back further, I have served in the ministry, worked fast food, and even as a file clerk/office assistant. Yet, it seems so many employers are not even giving me that opportunity, with even an interview.

Tomorrow, there is another job fair here in Austin. I have preregistered with this one, which is suppose to give me quicker access to the event. Before I go, I need to make more copies of my resume, which I recently redesigned (Placing the company name ahead of the job titles). Someone suggested a while back not focusing on the cleaning and cardboard bailing, that hasn't been a part of the resume I have been passing around, but was/is on the public version, which has a lot of the contact information redacted, for security reasons. Still, perhaps I should update that version to.

In addition, I have been searching for jobs through snagAjob.com and the Texas Workforce Commission. In fact as soon, as I finish this mornings post, I need to turn my attention to those websites. Snag A Job, has sent me several emails this week of possible opportunities to check out, and I need to get those applications made.

One of the pastors at church and I are very hopefully (and believing in faith) that I will find a job this week.

Jobs Data - Keys To Land A Job

Remember a few Presidential Elections back, when Bill Clinton used the phrase, "It's the economy, stupid," during his successful campaign against the President George H. W. Bush. Today, as I was writing this post I considered using that as my headline. Ultimately, I decided not to, even though I wish someone would tell President Obama that.

A news report was issued this weekend, regarding a Labor Department report which showed that the United States economy added 151,000 jobs in October.
The gain was certainly a welcome change after four months of job losses, and was better than what economists had expected. Still, it was not nearly strong enough to make a dent in unemployment. Nearly 15 million people are still out of work, and the unemployment rate remains stubbornly high at 9.6 percent.

So there are jobs out there. The bad news is that those of us who are unemployed can't find them. So how do we find those jobs and land one that will provide for our families? Especially, when 80% Of the openings aren't even advertised?

According to CNN's Your Money, which I like to watch every Saturday, "You have to know somebody who knows somebody to get you a job." According to those they had on the program, most jobs now days are landed by networking. No, not networking with the President, CEO or Human Resources Director, instead networking with an employee on the floor. Someone, that we would actually be working with. They then make a recommendation, "I worked with this guy in the last company, he's fabulous." So the idea, is to figure out how to network with those people and get the recommendation, that each of us need, to land that job.

For me personally, being new here, I am starting without knowing anyone, making it harder for me. That's why it is important for me to attend these job fairs, to talk to folks at church and to interact as much as possible. Then I have to follow up on each of the leads I am given. You never know, which lead may be the exact lead that lands me a job.

Another Rejection

I received another rejection email today. This one from an internet company, that I really would liked to have go to work for. There are several internet companies, that have offices here in Austin, and with my interests in internet and technology, I would love to be considered by some of them. One of them, is a company I am very interested in in my personal life. So I was disappointed, when they sent me a rejection email, without asking me for an interview.

So there is still a possibility.However, I need a job now. So my search continues. Hopefully, the job interview Monday, will turn into something. So trudge on. Looking forward, not looking back.

More Job Interviews

I recently had two job interviews. Both of which would require me to get some type of licensing. This past Friday, I had an interview, that would get me into the insurance and securities industry. However, it is commission based and a lot of up front money, that I don't have to spend.

Yesterday (Monday) I interviewed for another field of work. It would require me to get licensed with the state (less then $60) but the fee could be taken out of my first two paychecks. The hourly rate, would depend on the client that I am assigned to. It seems to be the most promising job to date. I should know something, by the end of the week on this one.

I really hoping, that I get this job, as my pastor at church recommended that I check into applying with this company. A company that another member of the church also works for. In-fact it was he that told me how to go about applying for a position.

TV Appearance Canceled

Well, the ABC show that I worked on as an extra, has been canceled. According to the Global Financial News-wires RTT News:
ABC has decided to pull the plug on its new show "My Generation" after only the second airing.

"My Generation" was a fictional documentary focused on a group of young people 10 years out of the high school. The show only averaged a lowly 1.6 rating for its premiere and then dropped to 1.1 in its second week in the Thursday 8 PM slot, finishing sixth overall.

So much for my big break, this time (LOL). I feel confident though, that there will be more shows and movies. I just have to give it time. Those appearances though will have to work around whatever job I find.

Another Job Interview

I have another job interview tomorrow. I am hopeful that I will actually get this job. However, I am not getting my hopes up. I am not even going to mention, who the company is until, I land the job. I will say though, that it is a publicly traded company, with locations all over the United States. It is retail and they offer medical, dental and vision insurance. Wow, vision. I have never worked for a company that offered vision. They also offer a 401k plus and ESPP (Employee Stock Purchase Plan). That is great news.
However, once I start rebuilding my retirement, how much do I put where? I was thinking maybe 10% in the 401k and 5% in the ESPP. Maybe that is to risky? What do you all think?
OK, OK, I know, I need to wait till I actually get hired. But, I am so confident that I will, that I am thinking out the options in the back of my mind.

The Prince of Thrift to be on TV?

Some of you may have heard, but I am sure most of you haven't. Yesterday, I had an opportunity to pursue one of my dreams. If only for a day. I received a call to be on the set of ABC's new sitcom, "My Generation." This was the first time as an Extra on any TV show or movie. Although, I have done a couple of modeling jobs, back in 1992.
The money isn't the best in the world, but it is better then nothing. So I am eager to get the check and for my chance to be in other projects before I get another job (or on my days off, once I land a full-time job).
Of course, there is no guarantee that you will be able to recognize me once the episode airs. My scenes may end up on the cutting room floor. Whether, I can be seen in the show or not, is not important. I really enjoyed the opportunity and look forward to watching the show, to learn more about it.

The program airs every Thursday at 7 pm on ABC.

Is the Time Now For My Dream?

Ever since, I was in high school my one of my biggest career goals was to be a full-time writer. Except for a brief stint with a now defunct newspaper, I never saw that dream come to fruition. When the fledgling paper went out of business, I could not find work with another paper, and was to broke to try to charge out into the world of freelance.
I moved to Topeka, KS and got a job in a fast food restaurant, eventually going to College to earn a degree in both my dreams. Communications and Political Science. However, because my bills were piling up, I had to go to work full time. So I all but gave up on my dreams and went to work full-time at the grocery store I was working at the time. Over-all I spent 18 out of the last 20-years in the grocery business. Working my way up the ranks. The other 2-years, was in the ministry. Since the ministry I have spent the remaining 13-years in the grocery business.

Now, I again in a new city, looking for work. Perhaps, this will be my big break that I needed. I am currently working on 2 writing projects (neither of which have buyers), that I hope will be very successful. Of course it is still to early to say what those projects are, but I will remain very optimistic about them.

Don't get me wrong. I am in no way saying that I will give up looking for work. My family must eat, and I must provide for them. Therefore, I will continue looking for full-time employment. Perhaps, in the financial sector. Perhaps in the political sector. Then again it could once again be in retail. Who knows. All, I know is I must provide for my family.

Job Search

The job search has been going, so-so. I have not been called for a job interview at the grocery store. Even though, I have applied for several different positions. I have letters of recommendations from the owner of my previous company, my previous manager and the executive director of a non-profit that I sat on the board of directors of.

I did have a job assessment and interview with an excellent last week and this past Tuesday. Now I am just waiting for the call telling me that I am hired, and to go get my drug test. That job, would be a great job, and even though, over all is a slight drop in pay, could be more, depending upon commissions and any potential overtime. I am really hoping, I will get this job, but I can't put all my eggs in this one basket. I will continue submitting further applications, until I get a call telling me that I have been hired.

In addition, I need to get my new drivers license and get my car re-registered, but that is another issue that perhaps I can discuss at another time.

Well, as I pack up my belongings, getting ready for the wedding and big move in 17 weeks, I have my resume updated. It took me a lot of work, writing, then rewriting, the rearranging, to finally get my normally 2-page resume unto one page (as the so called experts suggest).

Certified Financial Counselor

It has been suggested by readers of this blog, that I might consider becoming a tax preparer or financial counselor. Time to attend the classes would be a problem for me. So would the cost. H & R block tax preparer classes cost around $600, as I remember from the last time I checked. Financial counseling classes, from what I have seen, are $1500-$4000.

Still, I have been thinking more and more, that maybe I should do both these. If I became a CFC, I could offer tax preparation during tax season, while focusing on financial counseling the rest of the year.

I'm sure, I would eat up the curriculum of a subject I've come to love.

Exploring Rollover Options

This past week, I started my quest to find the funds, that I would be rolling my 401-K over into. My first stop was at a local Credit Union (Educational credit Union). Unfortunately, the only funds they have would be a traditional IRA and/or CD's. Not any funds that would be aggressive and help grow that money over the next 20 years. Well, that is unless you want to settle for only 2%-3% interest. The best interest rate at the Credit Union would be a 60 month CD, with only a measly 3.80%. For an account that is currently on about $3,000 that is not enough to help get that up to the 1 million dollars or better that I need to live on in my retirement. Rather, I need something that is at least 12%. The lady at the Credit Union, was very happy to help and assist me with my questions. She even that I was doing the right thing to investigate my options and to try to determine the funds I wanted to roll into ahead of time.

That was very different to my talk with the people at one of the local banks. When I arrived at Core First, they were annoyed that I was even seeking information, without having the rollover kit in my possession. After being shuffled into the cubicle of some gal, that spoke briefly about the readitional IRA, Roth IRA and the CD's. She gave me the card of someone in their investment department and told to call him, once I actually had the rollover kit. Indicating, that they weren't interested in talking to me and helping me to get informed without that rollover kit. Something, that I won't actually see for another month or two, since I have two weeks, before my place of employment is sold. Of course, I could give the bank a second chance and call for an appointment with the financial counselor, but my gut reaction is if they don't want my business, then they won't get it.

I left that bank, and headed for work. The next stop, on my investigation trail, would come on my day off. Everyone's needs are different, but for me, I need something aggressive. Something that will grow with an average compounded 12% interest/dividend every year. That is why my next call, was to Roger Schumaker of Retirement and Tax Solutions (5909 SW 28th), in Topeka, KS). My appointment was Monday afternoon. I think, based on my personal knowledge of Roger, that he will be who I end up working with.


From the moment, I walked into Rogers office, I knew this was someone that actually cared about my investment and my future retirement. The thing is, it's not just finding someone that can do the job, but someone that will take the time to help you be informed about what you are going to do.

We discussed two options that he recommended one was "unit investment trusts", by First Trust.

A Unit Investment Trust is a fixed portfolio of securities, held for a predetermined time, investors purchase units which represent an undivided ownership in the securities contained in the portfolio.
While this option looks interesting, I am not sure it is for me. Sure it is more aggressive then the most aggressive mutual fund, he gave me information on. However, I do not want to be re-evaluating my retirement portfolio every 15 months or so. So that takes me to the other option that he presented. That being those mutual funds.

Since, I personally want something aggressive, I automatically eliminate the moderate and conservative funds. That leaves either growth or moderate growth funds. The family I am looking at is the TransAmerica Funds and is MorningStar rated. Both have an average return of more then 12% over the last 5-years. Last year the growth fund had an impressive 8.69% and the moderate growth had a 7.97%. However, the market is horrible right now, so it is quite possible, that the return this year, will be no where close to even last years low numbers. Even so, it would be an awesome time to invest, while I can get in at lower costs. Allowing me to ride the tide back up. The question is, do I have the stomach to all my retirement fund to ride out the current down turn. I think, I can do it. That is why I don't want to be forced to look at and re-evaluate my investment every 15-months.

For me, I think, the unit investment trusts would be perfect for my automobile savings. It would be a fund that, like a CD, would allow me to cash out part of the funds at maturity, to buy that new car. After which, I could reinvest whatever is left, to continue saving for the next car. However, for my retirement, I don't want to be watching the funds that closely.

Information From Work About The Sale

There was a series of meetings yesterday at work. Two of the meetings was with the new owner. The other, was called with only an hours notice, when the current owners from Oklahoma arrived in town and called to say they would be at our store at such and such time.

It basically was the meeting, where the company was officially telling us what we already knew. It also answered a few questions about final pay, vacation pay and our 401-k.
Last paycheck
My last day of employment (as we already knew) will be July 12. On July 13, 2008 (my 40th birthday) I will be with the new employer. That last check, will be mailed to me on the following Thursday. Fortunately, I get direct deposit, so this will be no big deal for me.

Vacation Pay

I have taken 1 week of my 3 weeks of vacation. According to HAC, Inc, all unused vacation hours earned in 2007 for use in 2008 will be mailed to my address on file approximately 3 weeks after my last day of employment. Basically, that check could pay off about half of Fingerhut debt (a debt that is about to moved on June 27).

Insurance
If July 12, 2008 is my official last day of work, my coverage will be effective through July 31, 2008.

401-K
I will have the option, of cashing out, rolling it over or keeping it (for growth only) with the HAC, Inc account at JP Morgan. If the balance is below $1,000, I would be automatically be paid this balance, if a distribution request is not returned by the end of the quarter, following termination.

Overall, it is basic information, that anyone versed in finances at all, should know.
