Spending: Gas, Trash bags and Salt

Since, I didn't work Monday, I didn't spend anything. Last evening however, I somehow made it through the evening without purchasing a soda pop and/or a snack. I did however, purchase 40 30-gallon trash bags (2.99) and a bottle of Loretta Sea Salt w/ grinder ($1). All in all, I spent $4.29 before leaving the store.

As I was driving home, I stopped at the convenience store and put $10 of gas in the Thrifty mobile. Meaning overall I spent a whopping $14.29. Now, my car's gas tank is almost full.

  1. Why don't you fill up your tank all at once??
Also why do you keep buying soda at $1.5 a bottle while you can get a whole box of can for about $2 on sale.
Start baking from scratch, cookies, muffin that should cut on snack expenses.

  2. I do buy soda's by the box, in some flavors I even but store brand. Coke is the only name brand i use. However, at work, a can get knocked over and spilled. Running computer equipment (that's why drinks at the registers aren't allowed). Since, I leave it in my office, and nurse it all evening/day a can wouldn't be very practical.

I do cook some from scratch, but potato chips are cheaper then cookie dough (or all the ingredients). Except on a rare occasion, I don't buy sweets. When I do I can buy store brand cookies cheaper then I can the dough. For example, a 32 oz package of Always save cookies is $1.50. The cookie dough is $2 and you only get about dozen cookies. To make the the dough from scratch, I would have to buy some ingredients I don't use. Spending more money to make something I only buy a couple times a year. I eat much more potato chips then cookies. I would love to eat more muffins, but can't justify the cost for either pre-made or from scratch. Once I start eating better, my food budget would have to go up. For example today, I made a potato patty (from left over mashed potatoes, that I made from scratch), potato chips, and a slice of the cheese cake I was given after the get together on Sunday evening. When I got to work, the store had bought a cake for an employee who is being transfered to one of the Homeland Stores in Oklahoma, so I ate a piece of cake (again free) at work. All I bought tonight was a soda. That is until I was closing. At which time, I bought some hamburger and carrots to make some homemade potatoes, carrots and meatballs.

So before I go to bed, I have peel and slice up some potatoes and carrots, and make some meatballs, and get them in the Crockpot.

  3. oh the gas, I put what I can. Especially since, I had to wait 2 weeks on a 1 week income. Thankfully, some other sources of cash came in during that 2 weeks to help me get through. However, tomorrow I am to get 2-weeks of pay, and it's pretty much gone to bills already. So I will be struggling as I continue to move from weekly check to bi-weekly.

  4. Buy a nalgene bottle and pour your pop before leaving home? Or rinse and reuse one of the plastic bottle that you get at work.

You should look at: http://www.hillbillyhousewife.com/recipeindex.htm for very low cost snack

  5. drink water instead of soda, it actually makes you more thirsty.
I admire your blog and dedication but eating unhealthy now will cost you ALOT more in the future! I buy muffin mixes that go on sale 3 for $1.00. Each package makes 6 muffins, that is a great deal, and they are tasty. Also I make my own snack by slicing a potato or sweet potato really thin and dusting with salt (and sometimes vinegar) and baking. Good, healthy snack. And one potato goes a long way and is cheap.
Also I get a bag of apples at ALDI for about $2.50. It has about 10 apples. At .25 cents each that is a great deal and great for you.

  6. great ideas...I buy the muffin mix for my corn bread, but haven't done regular muffins that way.

I was just telling my ((good looking)) physical therapist yesterday, that I was trying to drink more water and Gatorade.
