Self esteem and uncontrolled spending and debting

Christopher Needler is the founder of DebtWatchers.net. The mission close to his heart is supporting those struggling with debt by encouraging them to fully discharge their debts with peace of mind and live debt free and prosperous thereafter.

“Most of us have developed a rather low opinion of ourselves – often masked by grandiosity and ego.”

The foundation of every attitude we hold and every action we take is our sense of ourselves in the world. Who am I? What am I worth? What do I deserve to have?

Until we can answer these questions with humility and self-respect we will continue to produce the same results we came here with, because our results are consistent with our opinions of ourselves. After years of uncontrolled spending and debting, most of us have developed a rather low opinion of ourselves – often masked by grandiosity and ego.

This sets us up for the binge-purge cycle so often at work in any compulsive behavior. Today, you might say, “I’m going to take control of this; today I will spend only five dollars, pounds or euros.” And tomorrow, or next week, you end up spending 500. You feel guilty. You try to control. And then you lose it again.

The DebtWatchers program is about stepping out of this cycle, and moderating your actions in a balanced way, sustainable day in and day out for the rest of your life. With each day lived like this, you come to feel better and better about yourself and the way you are living your life. It is never too late!

We have found that attitudes and actions are closely linked, and that when you change one, you change the other as well. This is why we have adopted familiar phrases such as, “Act as if” and “Fake it ‘til you make it.” There is a fundamental question in all this: why do sane people, who know what they need to do to take care of themselves, not do it… again and again and again? We found that we were living out unconscious habitual behaviors, which continued to drive us until we brought them to the light. Being present in the moment of choice, and keeping track of what you notice, makes these habits conscious.
