Ooooh The Temptation To Jump At This Offer

I just read about a home for sale, just 3 blocks from my current house. It sounds like a dream home compared to the starter that I currently live in.

Could I, possibly sell my little bungalow and move into something with a little more room?

  • $33,000
  • 1,623 square feet
  • Three Bedrooms
  • Master Bedroom with large sunroom attached
  • Two baths
  • Detached two car garage
  • Fenced back yard
  • Interior Updated in 2007
  • Hardwood floors
  • Two story with full basement
  • Fall 2006 Turn Around Topeka Special Recognition

To think a large bedroom with a sunroom for myself. Sounds so nice. When I could afford it, installing a sauna in that sunroom would be wonderful. I just hope the master bed is upstairs.

The downside, is that neighborhood is a little rougher then where I am currently.

  1. Is the house $33,000? I don't understand. In NJ where I live, the smallest starter homes are no less than $250,00. I mean like a 2 bedroom with no extras, and very little if any property. My 80 year old house on a 50 x 100 foot lot is valued at $186,00 and it has 2 of the smallest bedrooms, no bathtub, only a shower, very few closets, and the electrical needs to be all updated as well as the plumbing, and the foundation is going. (I don't own this home, it was my grandmothers, I just pay rent and taxes and insurance.) I could not imagine getting a home for $33,000. YIKES!
But as for you is this wise at this time? Will your mortgage be more, if yes you know you have to pass as you still have your debt to work on. Sorry for being the rain on your parade. -Becky

yes in the Midwest homes are considerably cheaper then on the 2 coasts. My little bungalow is appraised by the county at 25,000 and the private appraiser at 40,000. I have 2 bedrooms, which as you say are what have to be the smallest bedrooms ever. A double bed literally takes up half the room. And that's if is pushed against the wall so you can only get in on one side.

I know I can't afford the other house, even though as I read it, it is only selling for $33,000, but man it would be nice to have a real sized bedroom, plus and extra bedroom to use as my office/den. right now, i have my office squeezed into my bedroom and I am using a futon as my bed in order to save the space.

  3. Hey I'm in the Midwest, there are no house worth buying for $33k by me. Got to love Illinois. I think the lowest I have seen had been in large crime areas (outside of Chicago) in Aurora or Joliet. They generally are just under $100k or just above.

Anyway, NO! Dreaming is great, but you think of this house the way I think of a smaller one.

Unless you can purchase the new house - with no mortgage - to offset the higher costs to run and maintain - you can't afford it. The saying "more money, more problems" directly correlates to homes too.

Get debt free first. Then make choices like these. You may decide you like your security more. Besides should your "love" walk into your life you don't want to be in a permant position that keeps you from courting her. And most women, want to be involved in the "deciding where we live" thing.

    Patience my friend. Patience

  4. Wow! Don't feel bad my room is 6 feet by 10 1/2 feet. I can fit my fullsize bed and computer, that is it. My two boys share a room that is 7 by 11 feet. We have small bedrooms. Yikes!
I would also love a large room. I dream of adding on a huge sunroom and two bedrooms above it, then knocking wall out in kitchen to make my exsiting kitchen & bedroom into a decent size kitchen (my kitchen is also tiny.) We can not even have guests over for a meal, and all sit at table. But it is just a dream for now and really it's not that bad. We have a nice home, a yard, food, toys, books, a job, our health. WE ARE SO BLESSED! But I understand dreaming, that's ok too.

  5. My wife's whole family is in the midwest and we have never seen a house for $33,000. If I did, I would have bought 5 of them already...that is amazing. Pick it up!
