Largest Supermarkets

by Kevin Surbaugh

Something that I personally find interesting is business. One thing in particular that I like to follow is the annual ranking of grocery stores.
According to Supermarket News Sales among the Top 75 food retailers in North America recovered from a slump in 2009, rising 7.7% during 2010, compared with a cumulative drop of 0.2% the year before. Total revenues, encompassing sales of food and nonfood merchandise, totaled $960.3 billion last year, compared with $891.4 billion in 2009. Revenues among the 10 largest companies on the list rose 2.2% to $666.1 billion in 2010.

Also in 1998, the fourth-largest U.S. food retailer, Albertsons, initiated its merger with second-ranked American Stores--operator of Lucky Stores, Jewel, and Acme Markets--resulting in combined sales of $28.9 billion, operating 1,690 supermarkets in 38 States. These mergers are part of a recent strategy among the largest U.S. grocery store retailers to maintain their leading positions while considerably growing in size both by merging with or acquiring other grocery retailers
