Frugal Tip 33: Eat Seasonally

Earlier this year, I started posting a more in depth look at each of the frugal tips. Over the next few weeks I will publish the frugal tips that I have collected. Please note that not every tip will work for everyone. Chose as many of the tips that will work with you and your family and start implementing them. Today we will proceed with Tip #33 eat vegetables that are in season.

An important part of buying local is making an effort to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables when they are in season in your area. Although today's global marketplace allows us to buy foods grown virtually anywhere in the world all year round, these options are not the most sustainable.

By purchasing local foods in-season, you eliminate the environmental damage caused by shipping foods thousands of miles, your food dollar goes directly to the farmer, and your family will be able to enjoy the health benefits of eating fresh, unprocessed fruits and vegetables. Buying seasonal produce also provides an exciting opportunity to try new foods and to experiment with seasonal recipes. And it simply tastes better!
- Sustainable Table

Some very good points, but this is a finance blog. What does that have to do with finances? Glad you asked. Perhaps Gaiam Life says it best when they say,
Let’s begin with cost. When produce is in season locally, the relative abundance of the crop usually makes it less expensive. Think of the packaged herbs you see in a grocery store during the winter - a few (usually limp) sprigs of basil, all too frequently with black speckles and moldy leaves, cost about $3 per half ounce. In contrast, the gorgeous, bright green, crisp basil you see in both grocery stores and at farmer's markets in the summer when basil is in season often sells for as little as $1-2 for an enormous bunch. It’s the basic law of supply and demand, and when crops are in season you’ll be rewarded financially by purchasing what’s growing now.
- Gaiam Life
There you have it. That is what it has to do with a financial blog and that is why it is frugal tip number 33.

    Dear Friends,

We have some amazing news to share with you.  As many of you know we have been doing a fundraiser to help a fellow christian from losing her home to foreclosure and today through generous donations from The Christian community we have raised all the funds needed.  Click the link below to read the full story and updates

Yesterday we did a special JMC LIVE interview with Former CFO Alan Davis of Chillicothe Ohio. Mr. Davis shared his insights on our Governments out of control spending and just how this is going to affect our future generations of America and also what he sees needs to happen to have a budget for 2012.  click the link below to watch the full interview

At our Eternal Flame News Editorial site we have been keeping up with what is happening in our world today and also the Crisis in Lybia and the MIddle East www.eternalflamenews.blogspot.com

So there has been much ministy work to do in the past week to keep us busy.

Monday night Miranda's mom called to tell us that she had injured her knee and couldn't walk, had gone to Urgent Care and was going to have to see a Specialist.  Miranda went over and stayed from Monday night until Wednesday evening to take care of her mom.  The good news is her Mom didn't severely injure her knee and won't need surgery to repair it.  What she does have is bad artheritis in her knee so the Specialist gave her Mom a cordizone shot and some excercises to do to help strengthen the muscles around her knee.  So in Miranda's absence much of the ministry work was left to me and I didn't realize just how much Miranda does to keep JMC Ministries going every day.  I was happy that her Mom recovered enough for Miranda to come back home as soon as she did.  Please keep Miranda's Mom Becky in prayer as she continues to recover.

We've also got a new Vlog "Helping Those In Need" up and ready for viewing if you would like to get a little more insight on what we have been up to and what our plans are for the next few months.

We are just 2 little people just trying to help 1 person and 1 family at a time through the Love Of Christ With.  God Bless you Friends

Frugal Tip 32: Eat Less Meat

Earlier this year, I started posting a more in depth look at each of the frugal tips. Over the next few weeks I will publish the frugal tips that I have collected. Please note that not every tip will work for everyone. Chose as many of the tips that will work with you and your family and start implementing them. Today we will proceed with Tip #32 Eat less meat

Let's face it. Meat is probably the most expensive item in our daily diets. For the longest time, I have ate more veggies (and junk food) then meat. It's not that I am a vegetarian or anything like that. It's just that I don't like some cuts of meat. Although the cuts I do like I really enjoy. Roasted turkey, ham, bacon, pork sausage, hamburger and some chicken. All are very delicious in my diet. However, one way I was able to eat on less then $100 a month was the fact I didn't eat meat every day. As one can see in my $1 a day challenge. Now that I am married and with gas prices rising so high (which has a direct result on food prices) it is becoming harder and harder to keep that food budget down. However, the first way to do so is to cut the amount of meat you use in your diet.

In 2009 Frugally Green wrote a column on this very topic. Below is a brief excerpt of that post.
When you compare all the work and resources it takes to raise a cow to maturity and get it onto your dinner plate versus what would be required of, say, a cucumber, there’s no difficulty in seeing why you’re probably used to paying about 150% more for ground beef than your typical vegetable.

An animal like a cow requires enormous amounts of space, water, grain, hormones, antibiotics, and time to reach the status of tasty and consumable. The statistic that a vegetarian requires 300 gallons of water a day to produce their daily food compared to 4,000 gallons necessary for a meat-eater is just one shocking metric.

Looking back on my last few weeks of meals, I’ve realized that I probably eat meat, in one form or another, at least once a day, often twice. This is costing me a small fortune! If I scaled back my meat consumption to just once every other day, a small and easily achievable goal, I could really save some money. A quick back-of-the-napkin calculation brings it to around $37 a month! If I were to go wholly vegetarian, I’d save closer to $50.

I could save about $600 a year by practicing vegetarianism. Ya know, I’ve been meaning to do more traveling, and two years of vegetarianism would cover the cost of a round trip ticket to almost any major airport in the world. Compelling.

Don’t get too caught up with the money. It’s highly motivational for some, but there’s another very legitimate reason to evaluate your meat consumption.
    - Frugally Green

So how about it? Can you cut some of the meat out of your diet? You don't have to become a total vegetarian or vegan. Just cut down to one meal every other day with meat or perhaps only eat meat twice a week. Whatever, I am sure there are ways to cut your meat intake down and save some cold hard cash in your budget at the same time.
